While Jira most certainly is a versatile tool, it\u2019s really easy to get some of the things wrong.<\/p>\n<h2>Rookie mistake \u2013 setting \/ clearing a resolution<\/h2>\n<p>Probably every single Jira admin made this mistake at least once. If you don\u2019t set the resolution correctly, the resolution field will remain unresolved, even though you\u2019ve moved it to \u201eDone\u201d status.<\/p>\n<p>This can be very confusing. The issues will clog \u201emy open issues\u201d search. Even if you clear the assignees, they will still mess with your reports.<\/p>\n<p>To ensure that all the resolutions are set correctly, you need to always check if:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>You\u2019ve set a resolution value while transitioning an issue to \u201eDone\u201d category status.<\/li>\n<li>You\u2019ve set clearing the resolution field when transitioning an issue back from \u201eDone\u201d category status.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Example<\/h2>\n<p>If you have a very basic workflow consisting of 3 statuses \u2013 \u201eTo Do\u201d, \u201eIn Progress\u201d and \u201eDone\u201d, and the issue can transition between these statuses.<\/p>\n<p>Firstly, you need to get to transition to \u201eDone\u201d status. Then, you either add a screen that includes the resolution field (so the user must select a value) or create a \u201eUpdate Issue Field\u201d post-function setting the value for the resolution field after the transition.<\/p>\n<p>Secondly, you need to review the transitions to other statuses (\u201eTo Do\u201d and \u201eIn Progress\u201d). Ensure they all have the \u201eUpdate Issue Field\u201d post-function set, which will clear the resolution upon transition. Thanks to this, the issues that went back to \u201eTo Do\u201d or \u201eIn Progress\u201d won\u2019t be counted as resolved.<\/p>\n<h2>Review the problematic workflows<\/h2>\n<p>If you have a lot of statuses in your workflow, this will get increasingly complicated. Still, you need to perform that work carefully.
