It\u2019s not uncommon for Confluence users to create copies of your pages to display the same content in different places. In the long run it creates more problems than it solves, though.<\/p>\n<\/div>

Why are duplicates a problem?<\/h2><\/div>

The answer is pretty short \u2013 it\u2019s all about maintenance. If you need to correct some errors or change some 2-year-old data on one page, it\u2019s not really a big deal. If you need to do it on several pages, it becomes a problem. As mentioned several times already on our blog, the element most prone to errors is the so-called \u201cprotein interface.\u201d Simply put, this refers to the humans that use the system.<\/p>\n

Besides that, the more duplicates you have in your Confluence system, the more it will flood searches. They will show up in various places (e.g., macros). Sometimes, you need to select a page from a dropdown menu, and all of these pages are named exactly the same.<\/p>\n<\/div>

How to avoid duplicating content?<\/h2><\/div>

Thankfully, Confluence Macros provide the capability to use one page as the \u201cSingle Point of Truth.\u201d This means that you only need to change one page, and the changes will propagate to all the other pages. These Macros are called:<\/p>\n

Include Page<\/a><\/strong> \u2013 allows you to include a whole page inside another page. It will automatically update its content. When someone tries to edit the page containing the macro, they will see the \u201cInclude Page\u201d macro instead of the content.<\/p>\n

Excerpt<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>\u2013 allows placing a page fragment in a Macro window. That can be later used to be embedded into any other page.<\/p>\n

Excerpt Include<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 the \u201csecond part\u201d of Excerpt Macro, allowing you to embed the excerpted content into a page.<\/p>\n

If you need slightly more complex solutions, there is also an amazing solution available on the Atlassian Marketplace.<\/p>\n

Multiexcerpt\u00a0<\/a><\/strong>\u2013 allows creating multiple excerpts across pages and spaces and reusing these whenever and wherever possible.<\/p>\n<\/div>

Problems with including and excerpting<\/h2><\/div>

While avoiding duplicate content is important, there are also risks related to it. To be precise, risks of someone not seeing the content. It\u2019s worth to remember that all of the Macros listed above don\u2019t override standard permissions and restrictions in Confluence.<\/p>\n

Because of this, it\u2019s always very important to make the \u201cSingle Point of Truth\u201d pages available to everyone who needs to see the excerpted\/included content.
